Sinking

I feel myself sinking into ravenous quicksand

As I frantically cling to your reaching hand

The soft shifting surface slowly swallows me

And my cracking voice cries for help desperately

It grasps at my ankles, dragging me down deep

To pull me back into an infinite sleep,

Gasping for breath, lungs clutching at air,

But I cannot escape from engulfing despair,

You can only watch on as I’m wrenched from your grip,

Into the blackness I soundlessly slip,

Ignobly suffocated by grime and by grit,

Forever entombed in this bottomless pit.
